Many companies are accustomed to referring to items internally by their serial number, rather than UID. This makes sense, because it is easier and because within the confines of a manufacturing context, serial numbers are unique. When it comes times to ship these items, MIL-Comply makes it simple to generate Construct 2 UIDs with a list of serial numbers. This tool works as well for assigning Construct 1 UIDs to a CLIN's items.
Item UIDs are built up from the the Entity ID (CAGE) and the list of serial numbers provided by the user. For Construct 2, the CLIN's Part Number is included as well. The serial numbers in list can be separated by any combination of spaces, tabs, commas and/or carriage returns. They may even include ranges, such as '00001 - 00023', just be sure that there is a space on either side of the hyphen, otherwise it will be included in the serial number.
After entering (or pasting) the serial number list there are two features that will help check the accuracy of the list:
•[ Count ] - interprets the list, expanding ranges to arrive at a count of the UIIs that will be generated
•[ View UIIs ] - displays the derived UIIs that will be added to the CLIN
The bottom half of the dialog displays the characteristics that will go into each UID record. This is also where you can select the UID Construct.
Notice that when the Construct is changed from UID2 to UID1 the Specimen UII is regenerated to reflect that, changing from D8T31823SKDO-DCK00021 to D8T31800021.
When satisfied with the UIDs that will be generated click on [ Import Listed UIIs ] to bring them into the current CLIN.
MIL-Comply allow you to check new UIDs against the IUID Registry to ensure that the UIIs are, in fact, unique. As one might expect, WAWF will bounce an EDI Receiving Report submission that contains UIDs that are already in the Registry. More importantly, if you are adding UID items to the MIL-Comply database for the purposes of item marking it is a good idea to ensure that the UII is not already in use before applying the mark. See the UID Registry Confirmation topic for more information on configuring MIL-Comply for IUID Registry queries.
