The Packaging Worksheet dialog is where packaging codes for items are entered and edited. The Packaging Worksheet form may be printed. When a printed copy is unnecessary, you may also simply view the breakdown, as shown at right.
National Stock Number - the NSN of the item (25 chars); required only if Part Number is not used.
Part Number - of the item packaged, without regard for item manufacturer (32 chars); required only if NSN is not used, in which case Contract Number is also required.
Contract Number - contract that the creates a specific packaging requirement, to which a delivery order number can be appended (with a hyphen). There is not sufficient room for a contract and PIID, so one or the other should be chosen, if used (25 chars).
CLIN - the contract line item number for the item (6 digits).
Sales Order Number - an internal reference number for customer use (20 chars)
Item Description - generally the same as the Nomenclature / Noun, describing the item (48 chars)
Supplemental Data - a free format text block into which users may enter any appropriate information about packaging of the item to appear at the end of the printed packaging worksheet. Clicking the button brings up an editor.
Mil-Std Version - specifies under which Mil-Std-2073 revision the packaging code was defined; using the wrong version will likely result in errors due to missing and/or obsolete codes
Include Full Preservation Method Text - refers to the optional inclusion of the once separate preservation methods (Mil-P-116) that are now part of the preservation method reported; relevant only when using Mil-Std-2073 versions prior to 1D.
[ Enter Packaging Code ] - brings up the Packaging Requirements Editor
[ Show Breakdown ] - displays the code breakdown (shown above) for online review / reference
[ Print Worksheet ] - prints the breakdown and identification text as a packaging worksheet.
A Part Number or NSN is required. Additional rules and considerations for using them:
NSN - unique by itself, however, Contract and CLIN can be added as desired, or to differentiate requirements for a specific contract or item on a contract (packed for different destinations).
Part Number - not guaranteed to be unique for some users (e.g. mil-spec packaging houses), so Contract or NSN must be included.
Use of the item identifiers is somewhat informal in Pack-2073 when used as a standalone. When Shipper, Labeling and Contract Manager define packaging instructions they must adhere to the rules for Contract, CLIN, NSN, PN and Noun.
