Machine-Readable Interface (MRI) refers to the specification for constructing two-dimensional IUID Data-Matrix symbols which allows them to understood by scanners as IUIDs.  The term MRI is also used to refer to 2D UID symbols, differentiating them from UIIs such as "D1HDL9KTX252A0001".
